ShindoL’s Metamorphosis doesn’t play by the rules. These are the rules, the patterns we trust when we come to enjoy some ‘me time’ with this material. Everything is supposed to serve this end – any narrative matter is just foreplay, or something to encourage the viewer to seek out this kind of fictional fulfillment again. In porn, we know what will happen next – characters will fuck, or be fucked, to engage in some other activity to stimulate the voyeur and make them satisfied with their fantasy. In traditional narratives, every element combines to serve the audience’s immersion into what will happen next, and the possible greater meanings of what’s happening now. Pornography occupies a space in media that rebels against the idea that a story needs narrative themes and fleshed-out characters. But in the maelstrom of stories and drawings and bits of film that seem to serve little other purpose than titillation, like needles in haystacks, we often come across works marked ‘porn’ that strike us as something else by the end. The former is sexually explicit in a way that conveys some kind of recognizable artistic merit the latter has no such merit to speak of. People like to uphold a firm line between ‘art’ and ‘porn’ there is a difference, they will say, between ‘erotica’ and mere pornography. This was possibly the most depressing thing I've ever read, but it was still such a heartbreaking yet beautiful story, definitely one of my favorite manga of all time now.“In many ways, it was both a tragic and a preachy story, but I wanted ‘Metamorphosis’ to be about seeing the charm of a girl who is going through genuine misfortune” – ShindoL, ‘Afterword’ to Metamorphosis Metamorphosis is one of those manga that's gonna stick with me for a LONG time, the only other anime/manga that impacted me emotionally this much is Koe no Katachi/A Silent Voice. I would 100% recommend Metamorphosis to anyone who can handle TONS of sex, drug use, prostitution and violence, even if you don't like or enjoy it, at the end of the day it has something very meaningful to say that left a huge impact on me, which is why I think it's worth experiencing. Throughout the course of this manga, all I wanted to do was help Saki and give her a hug, I wanted her find a kind guy who would help her and live out a happy life after giving birth so badly, but life is no fairy tale, it's cruel, unforgiving and happy endings aren't that common, this manga just did a spectacular job at demonstrating that, the ending fit the overall theme of this story perfectly. This truly demonstrated that not every story can have a happy ending, it's still very depressing to think of what Saki's life could've been. One of the things that hit me the hardest about this manga was the fact that this is a very real situation, that something like this could be happening in the world right this moment. Metamorphosis was truly a beautiful yet tragic tale, at first I was a bit skeptical due it being a hentai, but soon enough I found myself completely immersed in the manga, all my doubts washing away, sexuality and sex in general is used to represent Saki falling deeper and deeper into a hole, it's extremely creative and executed very well on top of that. The manga ends with a final panel of the broken glasses laying on the floor with Saki's blood surrounding it.
